Overview
TX486 is an exceptionally integrated PC compatible PC/104 processor module. The high performance design enables software to run in a familiar environment both smoothly and effectively. TX486 can be used as the processor module in a PC/104 stack or as a stand-alone single board computer. It is pin compatible with other DSP Design PC/104 processor modules allowing easy upgrades to existing systems.

Processor
As standard, the TX486 is fitted with a 486DX4-100 processor device. Subject to a minimum order quantity, TX486 can be supplied with other processor devices.

PC Compatible
The TX486 is an IBM PC/AT compatible computer. It provides a familiar programming environment which allows the use popular PC applications and compilers to develop application. On-board resources include standard PC interrupt and DMA controllers and timers.

DRAM
TX486 has one standard SO DIMM socket. This allows 4M, 8M, 16M or 32M bytes of DRAM in a single module to be fitted. The module socket has a latching mechanism for robust performance. TX486 is supplied without DRAM.

BIOS
PC/AT compatible BIOS in Flash memory.

Solid State Disk
2M bytes of Flash memory is fitted to the TX486. This contains the BIOS and optionally application code in a solid state disk. The Flash disk can be bootable and has an integral Flash Filing System for long term reliability and ease of use. It is simple to use as it appears like a small hard disk.

Physical Disk
TX486 has both IDE and floppy interfaces. This enables the connection of hard drives, CD-ROM’s and floppy disks. The IDE interface uses a 2½" compatible connector and the floppy interface mates with a flat ribbon similar to that used on laptop floppy drives.

Serial I/O
Two fully featured RS-232 serial ports are provided (COM1 and COM2). Both serial ports are 16550 compatible with 16 byte buffers on the transmit and receive ports for fast data throughput. Com2 can be configured for half-duplex RS-485 operation by changing a solder link.

Parallel I/O
An enhanced parallel port is provided. Use it as a Centronics printer port or for general purpose digital I/O.

Operator Interface
Both a keyboard and mouse port are provided. A sound output for an external speaker is also provided.

Utility Circuits
Reset control circuitry ensures power fail detection and issues clean reset pulses. Watchdog circuitry can automatically restart the TX486 if your application fails.

Real Time Clock
An external battery connection is provided for battery back-up of the on-board calendar clock circuit.

Non-volatile CMOS settings
A serial EEPROM device stores the CMOS set-up parameters permanently without the need for any external battery back-up. This feature allows batteryless systems to be realised .

Expansion
16 bit ISA bus (PCbus) via PC/104 interface.

Power Supply
Single rail 5V supply required.

Environmental
0 to +60ºC operating, -40 to 100ºC storage temperature range. PCB material to UL94VO.

Dimensions
PCB size 3.775" x 3.550" (96mm x 90mm).

Development Platforms
The TCDEV development board provides VGA graphics, floppy and IDE disk controllers, standard PC connectors and a PC/104 site for the processor module and I/O modules. The board is mounted over a 3½ inch floppy drive and space is available for a 2½ inch hard disk drive. Also available is the TXPAK486 starter kit which includes the TCDEV, TX486, power supply, utilities and manuals for a plug-and-go system (DRAM is ordered separately).

Order Code
The TX486 module is supplied without DRAM. To order, specify TX486 module and DRAM Module part number.
